We are very busy planting 900 new trees. The trees are a combination of hazelnuts and Oaks – Robur and Ilex. For the first time we have planted trees inoculated with Tuber aestivum. (summer truffle). So hopefully in 4 years time we will be producing both summer and winter truffles. May is proving to be a colder than usual month, so it may be that the truffle will ripen earlier this year, however we will not know until early June.
April is the time that the truffle continues to grow in the soil. We saw a lot of evidence that truffles are growing even under the 4 year old trees. Hopefully this means we will have a very good season. I also experimented with cooking some delicious cakes with the freshly harvested hazelnuts, with great success.
We started harvesting hazelnuts, with our new nut collector, supplied by Trufficulture, which is effective. So far I am beating the white sulphur crested cockatoos to the hazelnuts, but this may not be the case towards the end of harvesting. The next stage of preparing for this year’s planting has commenced. The soil was ploughed in November, the lime spread in December. We have marked out the rows and position for the new trees.
